Thread is a low-power IPv6 mesh protocol built specifically for smart home devices. Unlike Wi-Fi devices that all connect back to a single router, Thread devices form a self-healing mesh — if one goes offline, the rest route around it automatically. The result is noticeably faster response times and better reliability in real-world conditions.

Thread works alongside Matter. A Matter-over-Thread device gets the best of both: cross-platform compatibility from Matter and rock-solid responsiveness from Thread. I've specifically tested Thread devices in my home for latency and mesh behavior, not just whether they pair successfully. If a Thread device had reliability issues in practice, it's not on this list.

Thread FAQ

What is Thread and how is it different from Wi-Fi?

Thread is a low-power mesh networking protocol built for smart home devices. Unlike Wi-Fi where every device connects back to your router, Thread devices connect to each other and self-route — if one goes offline, the rest adapt automatically. Thread devices respond noticeably faster than Wi-Fi equivalents and use less power, which matters for battery-operated sensors and locks.

Do I need a special hub for Thread?

You need a Thread border router — a device that bridges your Thread mesh to your home network. Apple HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd gen), and Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) include Thread border routers that activate automatically. Some Google Nest Hub devices and newer Amazon Echo devices also include border routers. If you already have one of these, your Thread infrastructure is already in place.

Which smart home ecosystems support Thread?

Apple Home has the most mature Thread support — HomePod and Apple TV 4K set up border routers automatically. Google Home supports Thread via Nest Hub (2nd gen). Amazon added Thread to newer Echo devices. SmartThings Station also includes a Thread border router. All work with Matter-over-Thread devices from brands like Eve and Level.
