Matter is the most important thing to happen to smart home interoperability in a decade. A Matter device isn't locked to one app or one manufacturer's cloud — it can be added to Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa at the same time. You pick which assistant you want to use without throwing away your hardware investment.

I've prioritized Matter-compatible devices in my own purchasing since Matter 1.0 shipped, and I now have a strong sense of which ones work reliably versus which ones are "Matter certified" in name only. Thread-over-Matter devices are noted separately — they're consistently more responsive than Matter-over-Wi-Fi equivalents on the same network.

Common questions

Matter FAQ

What is Matter and why does it matter?

Matter is an open smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung. A Matter device works with any of their apps simultaneously — add it once and it shows up in all four. It runs locally on your home network for faster response times and no dependence on any one manufacturer's cloud. Every new device I buy now has to be Matter-certified.

What device types currently support Matter?

As of 2024–2025, Matter covers lights, plugs, switches, locks, thermostats, sensors (temperature, humidity, motion, contact), cameras, blinds, robot vacuums, and speakers. The standard adds new categories with each major version update. Major brands including Philips Hue, Eve, Level, Schlage, Nest, and eero have released or announced Matter-certified devices.

Is Matter the same as Thread?

No, but they often go together. Matter is the protocol that makes devices work across ecosystems. Thread is the radio networking layer that carries Matter traffic for low-power and battery-powered devices. A Matter-over-Thread device gets cross-platform compatibility from Matter and mesh reliability from Thread. Matter also runs over Wi-Fi and Ethernet for powered devices.
