Alexa's biggest advantage is reach. No ecosystem comes close on the sheer number of compatible devices, and Alexa routines remain the most powerful and flexible automation builder available without writing a line of code. I use Alexa primarily for voice commands in rooms where an Echo is already present and for devices that work better on Alexa than on HomeKit.

Everything on this list I've personally tested with Alexa — not just "certified Alexa compatible" but actually paired, voice-commanded, and run through automations. If something was unreliable or required too many workarounds, it didn't make the list.

Common questions

Amazon Alexa FAQ

Does Amazon Alexa work without internet?

Mostly no. Almost all Alexa voice commands require an active internet connection to reach Amazon's servers. Some local-control features exist but aren't widespread. If your internet goes down, Alexa stops responding. This is why I keep Apple Home as my primary platform — HomeKit automations run locally through an Apple TV or HomePod hub.

Can I use Alexa without an Echo device?

Yes. The Alexa app on iPhone or Android works without an Echo, and Alexa is built into many third-party devices including Fire TV, select Samsung TVs, and compatible Sonos speakers. An Echo makes voice control more convenient but isn't required.

Does Amazon Alexa support Matter devices?

Yes. Echo devices (4th gen and later) include a built-in Matter controller. You can add Matter-certified devices directly through the Alexa app. Some Echo hardware also includes a Thread border router for Matter-over-Thread devices.
