Google Home's automation has improved substantially with the newer app, and for households deep in the Google ecosystem — Nest cameras, Nest thermostats, Chromecast, Android phones — the integration remains genuinely seamless. I've tested Google Home alongside Apple Home for several years, and there are specific products and use cases where Google's approach is meaningfully better.

Every device on this list I've tested in my own home with the Google Home app. I note where Google Home support is secondary to another ecosystem, and where it's actually the best-in-class option.

Common questions

Google Home FAQ

Is Google Home the same as Google Nest?

They're part of the same platform. Google rebranded its smart home hardware as "Nest" and its app and platform as "Google Home." Nest cameras, thermostats, and doorbells are all Google products — they all live in the Google Home app.

Does Google Home work offline?

Mostly no. Google Home depends on Google's cloud for most features. Some Nest devices have limited local control, but the platform is more cloud-dependent than Apple HomeKit. If your internet is down, most automations stop working.

Does Google Home support Matter?

Yes. Google was a founding member of the Matter consortium and added Matter support to the Google Home app. Compatible Nest Hub (2nd gen) devices act as Thread border routers. Matter-certified hardware is the best choice for a Google Home setup — it works in Google Home and is portable to other ecosystems if you ever switch.
